TOP STORY: As Yonkers' Getty square homelessness grows, the crisis may emerge as a major issue in the next mayoral race
This problem has been left unaddressed for decades in #Yonkers.
However, Yonkers City Councilwoman Shanae Natalee Williams is now heading a city council committee on homelessness.
Among the Yonkers' progressives and the progressive wing of the local Democratic Party, homelessness is rising on the agenda.
With about one quarter of Westchester County's homeless population, the problem could emerged as major issue in next year's mayoral race
The homeless problem could even effect county legislator races, and local city council races.
Most of the candidates agree that the Yonkers' chronic shortage of affordable housing and Westchester County poorly run bare bones homeless programs contributing to the increasing homeless population.
Today, homeless individuals sleeping on benches, doorways, sidewalks, in parks and in ATM lobbies are common sights in Getty Square.
Some of those people get off the street and into homeless shelters, but hurdles to building more and a chronic shortage of affordable housing in Yonkers is only exacerbating the situation.
It's about time Westchester County steps in and takes its proper role to take care of Yonkers' most vulnerable and to clean up the streets in the city of hills.

YONKERS HISTORY: : Cross County Shopping Center, also known as Cross County Center, is an open-air shopping mall located in #Yonkers.
The mall hosts over 100 stores and restaurants, including anchor stores Macy's, Old Navy and Sears.
The Cross County Shopping Center abuts the smaller Mall at Cross County.
Cross County Shopping Center opened in 1954 as the first mall in Westchester County. Its parking lot was built atop a former peat bog.

The 72-acre site included a hospital in the middle of the mall campus complete with a rooftop helipad the Cross County Hospital closed in the early 1980s.

The original anchor stores were Gimbels (later Stern's, now Macy's), John Wanamaker (now Sears), and F. W. Woolworth Company. Woolworth operated a main store and a garden store in the mall (the former is now mall space, while the latter was converted to Odd-Job Trading before becoming Old Navy).
Starting in 2008, the Cross County Shopping Center underwent a new development and upgrade, which was completed in 2012

The huge building that now houses Macy's Department Store (that was initially Gimbel's and then Stern's) has been enlarged by one third. It also features a new covered parking lot that is almost as large as the store; the underground loading complex has also been enlarged.
The former Cross County Hospital and Office Tower was converted into a Hyatt Place Hotel.
The eight floor, 155 guest room, 60,000 square foot lodging opened 2015.

In 2011, Red Lobster opened, and in 2015, Olive Garden, and Longhorn Steakhouse restaurants opened
The Cross County Shopping Center was originally named "Cross County Center"; the shorter name can still be seen on older signs. However, newer signs now say "Cross County Shopping Center" as does the mall's official website
http://www.crosscountycenter.com/
Adjacent to the Cross County Shopping Center and to its south (at 750 Central Park Avenue) is an indoor, air conditioned mall called The Mall at Cross County, which hosts a variety of stores and restaurants, and a large covered parking garage.
