TECHNOLOGY: Amazon MGM Studios is poised to usher in a new era of filmmaking, moving its proprietary artificial intelligence tools beyond internal testing and into a closed beta program with industry partners this March.
Launched last summer, the dedicated AI Studio has developed tools aimed at streamlining TV and film production, focusing on enhancements like improving character consistency across shots and bolstering pre- and post-production workflows.
Initial outcomes from this external program are expected by May.
The initiative, led by Albert Cheng, emphasizes that AI is intended to support creative teams, not replace them, with a clear focus on boosting efficiency and cutting costs.
Measures are also in place to protect intellectual property and prevent AI-generated content from being absorbed into other AI models. The studio has already demonstrated its capabilities, with Amazon’s “House of David” series featuring 350 AI-generated shots in its second season.
Collaborations with notable producers such as Robert Stromberg (“Maleficent”), Kunal Nayyar (“The Big Bang Theory”), and former Pixar animator Colin Brady are guiding the implementation of these tools, with support from Amazon Web Services and various large language model providers.
However, this accelerated adoption of AI in Hollywood arrives amidst growing industry apprehension.
While companies like Netflix are also embracing generative AI for production, the broader conversation is increasingly dominated by concerns over job security, the future of creative roles, and the very essence of filmmaking.
These anxieties are amplified by Amazon’s recent history, having cited AI success as a factor in significant layoffs, including 16,000 jobs eliminated in January and 14,000 last October, underscoring the profound implications this technological shift holds for the entertainment industry workforce.
