Shelley Mayer Press Release.
Mayer Calls on Albany to Hold Contractors Responsible for Sub-Contractor Misconduct.
Shelley Mayer, Democratic and Working Families Party candidate for the State Assembly (93rd Assembly District, Yonkers), called on the State Legislature to override Governor Pataki's veto of a critical worker's protection bill. The bill would have penalized contractors who continually use subcontractors who deliberately or repeatedly fail to pay the prevailing wage on public works project (S. 6441/A8057).
It passed with overwhelming bi-partisan support in the Assembly and Senate, but was vetoed by the Governor yesterday. By vetoing this important bill, Governor Pataki has let down the working people of New York, Mayer said. Contractors on public works projects shouldn't get away with employing subcontractors that knowingly violate prevailing wage laws and other legal labor standards.
By barring such contractors from bidding for future public project contracts, this bill would send a strong message that the state will no longer turn a blind eye to the practice of employing subcontractors that routinely ignore labor laws. I call on the State Legislature to override the Governor's veto and pass this significant legislation to uphold labor standards as soon as possible. I urge the two major developers coming to Yonkers, Forest City Ratner and Struever Fidelco Capelli, to make a public promise to the people of Yonkers to abide by the spirit of this law and commit to employing responsible subcontractors, with a history of paying fair wages and respecting the State and Federal labor laws.
