Art imitated life when understudies from the hit Broadway show “The Band’s Visit” dropped into a Catholic school

Students at St. Ann School on E. 110th St. sang “Answer Me,” a song from the show about looking beyond cultural differences between people to see their underlying humanity.

The Broadway play, which is based on a film by the same name, follows a group of Egyptian musicians who, through a misunderstanding, end up stranded overnight in a remote Israeli desert town.

“The Band’s Visit” explores themes of alienation, isolation and understanding between cultures.

The theater musicians were brought to the school through Education Through Music, a nonprofit that partners with city schools to provide music education.

Substitute pianist Sinai Tabak played a selection from the play — and drew rave reviews from students.

Peter Hess, another understudy who plays clarinet and flutes, gave the kids some tips on how he learns all the music.

“What I like to do is take little bits of music and little bits of melody, things I’ve got to memorize and learn, and I put them in my pocket. Not my actual pocket, but I try to collect them, and hang onto them and make myself familiar with them,” he explained.

It was a method the students could relate to.

“That’s what Mr. Green does. When we were in orchestra today, he was separating the parts and after that one we all did, we had to play all together.” said fourth grader Madison Praylow, 10, referring to her music teacher Jacob Green.

“That’s actually how you learn a lot, especially on piano,” said Tabak.

“The whole world of music would be super duper boring if lots and lots of cultures didn’t collide,” Hess said.

Victoire Lokossou, 13, a seventh grader and Student Council president, was the last to speak.

“This is such a big treat,” she said.

Many of the kids at the event will be attending the show next week.

Meryl Cullon, the professional development specialist at Education Through Music, worked with the students at St. Ann earlier this week, teaching them the song.

“Them having the opportunity to perform for those who performed for them is really special,” Cullon said.
