COMPASSIONATE JUSTICE: Five Just Graduated From The Yonkers Drug Court Treatment Program

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: At its recent graduation ceremony, there were five new graduates of the Yonkers Drug Treatment Court, a semi- annual event that has taken place
since the creation and implementation of the program in 2001.

PRESS RELEASE: Chief Judge Michael A. Martinelli, who presided over the Yonkers Drug Court Treatment Program graduation with Judge Arthur J Doran III.

YONKERS: Drug abusers are getting a second chance to turn their lives around with innovative Yonkers court program.

Participants in the program, enter voluntarily by pleading guilty to the criminal charges that they are accused of.

They are then required to complete a minimum of one year’s supervision by the Drug Court Team in order for them to be eligible to have their guilty pleas vacated and the charges against them dismissed.

Judge Martinelli added, “Each participant must agree that if they fail to complete their supervised treatment the will receive exactly the same sentence they would have received had they not been a successful participant and that would mean a drug conviction and jail time in the Westchester Penitentiary.”

Judge Martinelli also pointed out that the treatment programs are offered with the full acquiescence of the Westchester County District Attorney’s office and is limited only to those defendants charged with non -violent drug possession or other similarly related criminal offenses.

Judge Martinelli noted, “That at the inception of the drug court program, seventeen years ago, it was viewed as experimental and was the only one of its kind in the metropolitan New York area.

It was initially limited to the Yonkers and Mount Vernon City Courts.”

Judge Martinelli, together with his colleague, Judge Arthur Doran, said, “That they firmly believe that “rehabilitation rather than incarceration” is a win-win, not only for the individual participants in the program, but also for their friends, family members, Yonkers taxpayers, and the entire Yonkers Community. In my twenty-two plus years on the Yonkers
City Court Bench, nothing has given me greater personal satisfaction than to have the parents of a graduate or the graduate themselves, thank our team for giving them their life
back.”

About Judge Mike Martinelli

Yonkers City Court Chief Administrative Judge Mike Martinelli is a candidate for the New York State Supreme Court in the 9th Judicial District, which encompasses Westchester,
Putnam, Dutchess, Rockland and Orange Counties.

Mike was born in Mount Vernon, NY, the eldest of six sons to former Yonkers Mayor Angelo and Carol Martinelli.

He grew up in a nurturing Italian home, surrounded by grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and extended family. No occasion or holiday was too small for celebration.

He attended and graduated Mount St. Michael Academy, University of Notre Dame (BA) and St. John’s University School of Law (JD).

He is married to the former Jeanne Vergari for the past 43 years, and together they are the proud parents of daughter Jeanette, and son and daughter-in-law, Mike, Jr. and Jeanna.

They are the doting grandparents of Stefano, age 11, whose special needs have now taken them to new awareness of autism, Angelo, age 2, and are expecting a granddaughter in October.

Prior to taking the Bench in 1996, he enjoyed a 20-year career as a litigator specializing in commercial, real estate, criminal and zoning law.

In addition to judicial duties, since 2008, he is the  administrative judge of the court supervising 6 other judges and a staff of over 50 clerks, stenographers and court attorneys.

HELPING OTHERS: Yonkers Tennis Great Talks About Mental Health

YONKERS: When James Blake unofficially retired from professional tennis in August 2013, he was a household name.
Over the course of a roughly 14-year career, the 38-year-old American from Yonkers, N.Y., worked his way to becoming the fourth-ranked singles player in the world, with 10 wins on the ATP World Tour and countless trips to grand slams.
Roland Garros, Wimbledon, Flushing Meadows — you name it, he’s probably been there. And deep in the draw.
But Blake by no means coasted through his career. In May 2004, during the Italian Open, he was practicing with fellow American Robby Ginepri on a drizzly day in Rome. Both lost in the first round, and they found a clay court to, naturally, play a match.
Blake slipped, and his body surged forward, hitting the net post while running down a drop shot. He fractured seven vertebrae — all just before the French Open.
That same year, his father, Thomas, died of stomach cancer. Blake also developed shingles on his face, known as zoster, which attacked nerves and led to temporary paralysis in half his face.
Going from highs to lows in such a short span of time caused him to search his soul.
“The doctors told me it was something where they wouldn’t even be able to tell if it will ever get better, or they’d have to do an experimental procedure to put a nerve from my leg into my face,” said Blake.

“Even then, they said it’d take a month to determine whether I was going to heal at all."
“So, for that month, not knowing if I was ever going to play tennis again — or if I would ever look normal again, be able to smile or close my eye in a normal way — that made me think about what else I could do.”.....

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Rising Ground In Yonkers Is Taking Over Edwin Gould In New York City

PRESS RELEASE: Social Service agency union Intended to Streamline Costs and Broaden Social Impact

YONKERS: Rising Ground’s Management Proficiency and Edwin Gould’s Intimate Partner Violence Expertise Will Enhance Programs of Both Organizations

Two of New York’s leading human service organizations announced today that they are integrating operations. Edwin Gould Services for Children and Families will become a subsidiary of Rising Ground, a 187-year-old organization that currently operates in the Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Westchester. Henceforth, both organizations will operate under one uniform set of policies and practices under a single mission, guided by the same values, expectations, and vision, as they expand services to more New Yorkers facing adversity.

The consolidation will strengthen and broaden the supports both organizations provide to a total of 25,000 children, adults, and families throughout the five boroughs and Westchester. With a combined workforce of 1,800 employees, the resulting larger, stronger, and more diversified organization will spur new and innovative ways to deliver services, ultimately redirecting millions of dollars in savings toward improved and additional programs.

Combined expertise will lead to new services

According to Alan Mucatel, CEO of Rising Ground, “This begins a new day for two organizations long dedicated to helping New York’s children, adults, and families to move forward and upward in their lives. Our new strategic partnership will benefit the individuals and families we support by giving them access to a broader range of health, mental health, developmental, family empowerment, and supportive services. We also expect to use our combined expertise to develop new services in response to community needs.”

Under the new partnership, Rising Ground, which, since 2009, has nearly doubled in size and has a $100 million operating budget and staff of 1,400, will continue to provide a full range of services—47 programs in all—for adults, children, and families, including special education, early childhood programs, foster care and adoption programs, early childhood and special education, mental health, services for individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities, and juvenile justice services, among other areas of support.

With the integration, Rising Ground will expand its presence in the areas of child welfare, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and care management. Brooklyn-based Edwin Gould, which today has a $30 million operating budget and 400 employees, will continue to operate foster care preventive services programs. Other programs will migrate to Rising Ground and include foster care services; supports to individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities; and Edwin Gould’s STEPS to End Family Violence.

STEPS is among New York City’s more renowned, comprehensive programs to support victims of intimate partner violence. Through work in all five boroughs, Rikers Island, and educational programs in 17 public schools, STEPS reaches over 5,000 New Yorkers every year. As intimate partner violence often impacts the families and children supported by Rising Ground across its varied programs, the expertise of the STEPS staff and the program’s services will be readily available to assist.

The case for integration

Edwin Gould’s programs will benefit from Rising Ground’s proven expertise in management, which was recognized when the organization received the prestigious Gold Nonprofit Excellence Award. Rising Ground will assume all administrative functions for the two organizations, which include back office work, information technology, fundraising, grant writing, and board oversight, resulting in significant savings for both organizations in insurance, health care, and other administrative costs.

Mucatel noted that two foundations and one foundation-supported fund have shown their support for this move by awarding a total of $375,000 to Rising Ground to operationalize the integration:

• A $250,000 grant from the Booth Ferris Foundation will support the development of a Rising Ground Centralized Access and Referral Department. With this unique centralized in-take system, an individual or family that enters a single program can be assessed for other needs and receive coordinated support from the organization’s many other services.

• The New York Merger, Acquisition, and Collaboration Fund (NYMAC), which encourages and supports mergers and collaborations between nonprofits serving New York City, awarded Rising Ground an $80,000 grant to help cover the administrative costs of the integration. NYMAC expects that the integration of the two organizations will significantly reduce combined overhead and improve program effectiveness.

• With a $45,000 grant from the Redlich Horwitz Foundation, Rising Ground has brought in experts to identify best practices in both the Rising Ground and Edwin Gould foster care programs, and to develop a plan to create a combined program that is more effective than either one alone.

Access to “The widest range of assistance”

“Through the integration of the two organizations and shared resources, we will bolster data-driven and outcome-oriented programming while ensuring that those we support have access to the widest range of assistance, and our staff to the best training, technology, and resources,” said Sharron Madden, the newly named Executive Director of Edwin Gould. “We’re all very excited and have worked long and hard to make this partnership a reality.”

Mucatel added: “We couldn’t be more pleased to be working with the dedicated professionals at Edwin Gould. We believe that through affiliation of these two organizations we are advancing our work and creating a stronger, more sustainable long-term structure that gives us the depth, expertise, and adaptability that will benefit the people and communities we support. This is a winning strategy.”

About Rising Ground

Rising Ground, which recently changed its name from Leake & Watts to more accurately reflect its full scope of services, is a leading nonprofit human services organization, currently operating 47 programs at 25 different sites throughout the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Westchester, and employing a workforce of 1,400 people. Daily, it provides children, adults, and families with the resources and skills needed to rise above adversity and positively direct their lives. It has won the prestigious Nonprofit Excellence Award.

Rising Ground delivers dedicated support to facilitate safe environments for children and help families thrive through its family stabilization, family foster care and adoption programs; innovative educational programs that advance learning from early childhood through high school; caring services for children and adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities; result-focused programs that help youth involved in the juvenile justice system change the trajectory of their lives; and pro-active community health initiatives that foster physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Founded as an orphanage in 1831, Rising Ground has been at the forefront of evolving community needs and has become a leader in utilizing result-driven, evidence-based practices. Today, the organization’s work is a positive force in the lives of more than 12,000 individuals.   For more information, visit www.risingground.org.

2018 ELECTIONS Marc Molinaro advertisement declares Andrew Cuomo ‘Guilty’

https://youtu.be/4LUtLJRMCTw

Republican gubernatorial nominee Marc Molinaro hits Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo hard for corruption in his administration in a new television campaign.

https://www.timesunion.com/news/article/Judge-tells-Percoco-jurors-they-can-reach-12749532.php

The 30-second advertisement highlights Joe Percoco, a top adviser convicted of corruption charges in March, and Alain Kaloyeros, the state’s nanotechnology czar, who was recently convicted of bid-rigging charges.

The probe into political donations from Crystal Run is also referenced, with the advertisement implying Andrew Cuomo himself is being targeted.

“Andrew Cuomo’s top advisers are going to jail for stealing your tax dollars…and now he’s under investigation again in another pay-to-play scandal,” says the narrator of the advertisement.

The Daily News, which first reported on the advertisement, also broke the news that the Cuomo campaign is pushing back against the Crystal Run reference in the advertisement.

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/ny-pol-cuomo-molinaro-corruption-20180819-story.html

The Times-Herald Record article cited his work!), “Cuomo under fire over Crystal Run donations,” doesn’t specifically say the governor is the subject of the ongoing federal investigation.

http://www.recordonline.com/news/20180801/cuomo-under-fire-over-crystal-run-donations

Cuomo campaign spokeswoman Abbey Collins confirmed that a cease and desist letter had been issued in response to the advertisement.  “It is false, cheap, and nasty — it is exactly what you would expect from Trump mini-me Marc Molinaro,” Collins said about the advertisement in a statement.

Molinaro has made combating corruption a top priority for 2019. He crafted an accountability plan, which includes term limits and closing the LLC loophole.

https://www.wgrz.com/article/news/politics/molinaro-reveals-reform-plans-2019-albany-accountability-act/71-573319241

“It’s time for a change,” declares the advertisement. “Marc Molinaro has a real plan to fix New York and end Cuomo’s corruption for good.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Leading Women’s Organizations Endorse Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins at Rally Outside Federal Courthouse

PRESS RELEASE:  With the President of the United States and the US Supreme Court threatening the rights of women to make private health care decisions, and with every New York State Senate Republicans refusing to vote to protect women’s reproductive choices, New York’s leading women’s advocacy organizations came together to endorse Senate Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins for re-election

WESTCHESTER COUNTY: Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins is on the ballot in the upcoming primary election on Thursday September 13th.

At a rally outside of the Federal Courthouse in White Plains, Planned Parenthood Empire State Votes PAC, the National Institute for Reproductive Health Action Fund PAC, Eleanor’s Legacy, Westchester Coalition for Legal Abortion PAC, NOW-NYS, and dozens of local activists and elected officials spoke out in support of re-electing Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins and making her the majority leader of the New York State Senate.

Advocates say this is a critical step towards standing up to President Trump and passing State laws that protect women’s choice like the Reproductive Health Act.

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins has been the leader of the Senate Democratic Conference since 2012 and if Democrats win the majority in the November elections, she will be the first woman majority leader in the history of New York State.

She has been one of the leading advocates in New York to pass the Reproductive Health Act, which would strengthen the State’s abortion laws by codifying the protections guaranteed in the landmark Roe vs. Wade decision into New York’s health code.

The state laws permitting abortion are currently written into New York’s criminal code and were created in 1970, three years before the Roe vs. Wade decision.

The Reproductive Health Act was one of the first bills Senator #AndreaStewartCousins sponsored when she first become a State Senator.

“I am grateful for the support from these outstanding organizations who are on the front lines of the fight for women’s rights. This is a pivotal moment for women in this country with President Trump and the US Supreme Court threatening our protections and the New York State Senate Republicans refusing to stand up for women. When New York created its abortion laws in 1970, 12 Republican State Senators voted in favor of women’s choice. But today, in 2018, not a single Republican Senator will cast a vote for the Reproductive Health Act. That’s why it is so crucial that we elect a Democratic State Senate in November. So, I am asking my constituents to please vote for me in the primary on September 13th so that I can continue my advocacy on behalf of women and girls and come next year, make history as the first woman majority leader in the history of New York State,” said Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins.

“Senator Stewart-Cousins has never backed up or backed down when it comes to fighting for our state’s women and girls. With endless attacks on reproductive rights on the federal level, we must have leaders like Andrea Stewart-Cousins who will fight for the freedoms essential to all New Yorkers. It’s time to elect a senate leader that will give a voice to the voiceless and fight for essential protections to shield us from federal attacks. We need Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins,” said #RobinChappelleGolston, President & CEO, Planned Parenthood Empire State Acts.

“Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins is a consummate champion for reproductive rights and abortion access. She embodies New York values, leading the charge to pass the Reproductive Health Act and the Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act, and fighting for the women and families of her district. The NIRH Action Fund PAC is thrilled to endorse Andrea Stewart-Cousins for State Senate,” said #AndreaMiller, president of the National Institute for Reproductive Health Action Fund PAC.

“At a time of real crisis in America, when the sitting president and anti-choice Republican-controlled Congress are committed to stripping women of all of our constitutional rights to control our own bodies; when the president’s nominee for the US Supreme Court is an outspoken opponent of abortion rights and committed to overturning Roe v. Wade, we must do everything in our power to protect the women of New York. We must stand united with Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins to make New York State a Reproductive Rights Sanctuary.” #CatherineLedererPlaskett, Westchester Coalition for Legal Abortion PAC.

“NOW is proud to endorse Andrea Stewart-Cousins for State Senate.  Andrea is a strong leader and advocate for the women and girls of New York and has NOW’s full support,” said Sonia Ossorio, President of NOW-NYS.

“Andrea Stewart-Cousins has never forgotten why she ran for office: to make a difference for the women and children of Westchester County. Andrea’s vision for New York, funding quality public schools, keeping streets safe with sensible gun laws, and protecting a woman’s reproductive rights, is a vision for a New York where we can all thrive, together. Eleanor’s Legacy is proud to endorse Leader Stewart-Cousins for re-election to the New York State Senate and to be the fearless leader for the women and children of Westchester,” said Brette McSweeney, Director of Eleanor’s Legacy.

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins’ Record on Women’s Issues

In the face of unrelenting attacks from the Trump Administration, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins has stood up as one of the strongest advocates for women in New York State.

In addition to her leadership on the Reproductive Health Act, Senator Stewart-Cousins has:

Been a staunch advocate for pay equity in New York State

Lead the fight to improve New York’s sexual harassment laws

Played a key role in creating New York’s paid family leave law, the most comprehensive in the nation

Strongly supported the Comprehensive Contraceptive
Coverage Act which would improve access to contraceptives for women by requiring insurance companies to cover all FDA approved contraceptive options.SOURCE:

FRANKLY SPEAKING: Frank Spotorno Speaks Out On The Possibility Of Term Limits in Yonkers

"90% of homeowners do not support extending or eliminating term limits. It’s that simple. The city council might be bad fiscal managers, but they’re not that stupid."

"Economic development without any real economic benefit to the City had put lipstick on the pig and taxpayers are intrested in a change and not term limits."

"Yonkers voters are going to be up in arms if the mayor tries circumventing the voters and trying to jam it down our throats by the City Council alone."

"The media should do a piece on next years Yonkers projected budget deficit. It will be Epic!"

"Yonkers seniors know that the City is on the brink of bankruptcy, unless something changes."

"Go to south Yonkers and drive thru Ghetto square, big deal you put up some new buildings but there is blight all around. Yonkers needs a development plan as bad as it needs a new fiscal management plan. This will only come with new leaders, who truly represent the homeowners."

"Seniors are on the verge of losing their homes as Yonkers taxes keep rising like the heat at the equator."

"The Governor and U.S. president are limited to two terms and Yonkers politicians should also be limited to two terms."

"Taxpayers are looking forward to seeing new faces running for Yonkers Mayor."

"Yonkers homeowners desperately need someone who will bring new ideas and goals to the table."

"Shame on any City Council Person who votes to extend theirs or mayorial term limits."

"Council People beware, going against the will of the people whom you serve will only lead to your own political demise!"

"Any Yonkers politician trying to break the will of the people will be sued. Term limits will not legally be changed without a referendum vote."

Even if term limits are sneakily rescinded by the city council, in the immortal words of former mayor John Spencer, “The mayor will not have a China mans chance in hell.”

"I and many others will definitely support a petition to stop this from happening. The VOTERS voted twice not to rescind term limits. These elected officials are absolutely disgusting each and everyone of them if they do this."

"We cannot continue to vote these selfish individuals back into office. They lie to us when campaigning then do what is best for them and not us."

FIGHTING FOR STUDENTS: Civil rights attorney and Attorney General candidate Michael Sussman is calling for a change to how the state funds education and comes up with its funding formulas.

YONKERS: Michael Sussman says as attorney general he would force the courts to intervene so this issue won't be swept under the rug anymore.

He believes the current system has led to segregation and inequality for students of color statewide

Michael Sussman was featured in the mini series, "Show Me a Hero". The hit TV doc detailed the Yonkers school desegregation lawsuit in 1985.

Michael Sussman was a political activist and well known civil rights attorney who played a key role in representing the NAACP in the epic battle.

Judge Sand issued a 670-page ruling against Yonkers in 1985, and then ordered the city to build 200 units of public housing and set aside 600 homes for low-income families in the east side of town, which is mostly white and middle class.

Michael Sussman, represented the N.A.A.C.P. chapter throughout the case.

As part of the settlement, Yonkers agreed to maintain the 800 units of public and low-income housing for at least three decades after the units became available.
