Panama Papers Journalist Killed by Car Bomb

An investigative journalist in Malta who exposed her island nation's links to offshore tax havens using the leaked Panama Papers was killed in a car bombing on Monday, an attack that shocked Malta and was condemned by leaders of the European Union.

The journalist, Daphne Caruana Galizia, 43, died when the car she was driving exploded in Bidnija, a hamlet in north-central Malta.

Her final blog post, accusing the prime minister's chief of staff of corruption, had been published about a half-hour earlier.
NEW YORK TIMES: An investigative journalist in Malta who exposed her island nation’s links to offshore tax havens using the leaked Panama Papers was killed in a car bombing on Monday, an attack that shocked Malta and was condemned by leaders of the European Union.
The journalist, Daphne Caruana Galizia, 53, died when the car she was driving exploded in Bidnija, a hamlet in north-central Malta. Her final blog post, accusing the prime minister’s chief of staff of corruption, had been published about a half-hour earlier.

Ms. Caruana Galizia ran a blog that was so popular and influential that it helped cause a political crisis when she accused Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s wife of benefiting from a secret Panamanian shell company that was used to deposit unexplained payments from Azerbaijan’s ruling family. Mr. Muscat, who has denied wrongdoing, called a snap election in June, which his Labour Party won, giving him a second term.

In a statement on Monday, Mr. Muscat said he was shocked by the killing.

“I condemn without reservations this barbaric attack on a person and on the freedom of expression in our country,” he said in a
statement. “Everyone is aware that Ms. Caruana Galizia was one of my harshest critics, politically and personally, as she was for others too. However, I can never use, in any way, this fact to justify, in any possible way, this barbaric act that goes against civilization and all dignity.”
Mr. Muscat said the national police and security forces had been instructed “to take every step necessary in the investigations” to find whoever was responsible.....

Cub Scout Kicked Out For Questioning Politician

A Cub Scout in Broomfield has been kicked out of his den, allegedly for asking pointed questions of a Colorado state senator at meeting organized by the Boy Scouts.

Eleven-year-old Ames Mayfield, a fifth-grader at Prospect Ridge Academy and a Scout for five years, on Oct. 9 asked Sen. Vicki Marble, R-Fort Collins, questions about gun control, and about comments Marble made at a 2013 legislative hearing on poverty about mortality rates among African-Americans.

"I was astonished that you blamed black people for poor health and poverty because of all the chicken and barbecue they eat," Ames said to Marble at the Scout meeting.
"I didn't, that was made up by the media," Marble replied. "So, you want to believe it? You believe it. But that's not how it went down. I didn't do that. That was false. Get both sides of the story."

The boy’s mother, Lori Mayfield, on Wednesday said Ames was kicked out of his den, or Scout group, as a result.
“He is still kind of reeling from this,” Mayfield said. “He is really sensitive, my heart breaks for him.”
Ames’ questions, and other Scouts’ questions, were recorded and posted on YouTube by Mayfield in a video titled “Vicki Marble denies chicken-gate.”
“I was astonished that you blamed black people for poor health and poverty because of all the chicken and barbecue they eat,” Ames said to Marble at the Scout meeting.
“I didn’t, that was made up by the media,” Marble replied. “So, you want to believe it? You believe it. But that’s not how it went down. I didn’t do that. That was false. Get both sides of the story.”
In 2013 Marble said: “When you look at life expectancy, there are problems in the black race. Sickle-cell anemia is something that comes up. Diabetes is something that’s prevalent in the genetic makeup, and you just can’t help it.
“Although I’ve got to say,” she continued at the time. “I’ve never had better barbecue and better chicken and ate better in my life than when you go down South and you, I mean, I love it. Everybody loves it.”.....

LOL...Ridiculous, both the question and the answer were reasonable.

Reading the original statement by the senator was, while a little questionable, not outrageous and she made a good point that everyone needs to do a better job in taking care of themselves and that health is a complicated matter.

I hope the kid isn't too upset by this and I hope the senator didn't have anything to do with the kid getting kicked out of the den, I suspect the den leader got spooked and reacted.

MAYOR RICHARD THOMAS: Weekly Report for October 14, 2017

Third Restraining Order Issued Against Comptroller Maureen Walker
Yesterday, Westchester County Supreme Court Judge Charles Wood issued a temporary restraining order directing J.P. Morgan Chase to issue payment for a police vehicle that was purchased by the Mount Vernon Police Department, authorized by Mayor Richard Thomas and Comptroller Maureen Walker, and then illegally canceled by the Comptroller.
This is the third restraining order issued by a court against Comptroller Maureen Walker for her continued obstructionism and interference with government functions.
The most recent restraining order was necessary due to the Comptroller illegally canceling a check after it had been delivered to the vendor for police vehicles. The Mount Vernon Police Department requested the vehicle. The request was approved and a check for the purchase was cut, released, and signed by the Comptroller as well as the Mayor. The check was then given to the Mount Vernon Police Department to give to the dealer before taking possession of the vehicle. Soon after, the city was informed by the dealer that the check had bounced. The Comptroller has yet to offer any explanation as to why the payment was stopped illegally and apparently without cause.

In continuing their efforts to create a fully digital and transparent City Hall, Mayor Thomas and key members of his administration sat down with civic engagement experts Accela. Accela has created a platform were citizens and municipal workers can engage different departments with real-time data that can be easily accessed through your computer or their app. The app was introduced to City Hall thanks to DPW Commissioner Joe Nigro, who found the company while researching app platforms to help the city manage code enforcement and constituent engagement. The presentation was conducted by Frank R. Garguiolo, Business Development Executive at Accela and Carl Figueiredo, Solutions Consultant at Accela.

Meeting with Andrew Young

This week, Mayor Thomas meet with Ambassador Andrew Young, a long-time civil rights activist and colleague of Dr. Martin Luther King. Ambassador Young shared with Mayor Thomas how, as Mayor of Atlanta, he was intimately familiar with a city that had to address environmental justice issues such as sewer repair and dealing with colleagues in government who fail to appreciate how serious EPA mandates are. Mayor Thomas and Ambassador Young were joined by Chairman of the Mount Vernon Fun Committee Butch Thomas as well as Ronnie Cox.
