AIR FARE DEAL: Hong Kong offers 500,000 free plane tickets to lure tourists back

CNBC: Hong Kong is giving away 500,000 flights this year—here’s what to know

If you’re looking for a fun trip and a free flight, it might be time to turn your eye to Hong Kong.

On Thursday, the city’s leader John Lee announced Hong Kong is giving away 500,000 plane tickets this year to encourage tourism. The giveaway will begin in March and last six months, according to Bloomberg.

Fred Lam, chief executive officer of Hong Kong’s Airport Authority, added that there will be various ways of winning the tickets, including a lottery system and two-for-one purchases. In 2020, the Airport Authority spent $2 billion to buy tickets from airlines, including HK Express, Cathay Pacific Airways, and Hong Kong Airlines.

Hong Kong will also give away 80,000 flights to city residents this summer, and another to 80,000 residents of the Greater Bay Area in the U.S., Lam said.

It’s all part of the government’s plan to revive the city’s economy after its self-imposed three-year isolation during the pandemic, political turmoil due to controversial security laws going into effect in 2020 and violent protests over brutal police tactics in 2019.....

1010WINS >>> "HORRIFIC": 150 cats trapped with dead couple in NY 'hoarding house,' some 'in the walls' - By Adam Warner

YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- A couple was found dead in a “dilapidated” Westchester County “hoarding house” this week surrounded by 150 starving cats, some of them trapped in the walls, animal rescuers said Friday as they urgently seek help with their “largest rescue” ever.

Yorktown police make the shocking discovery Monday as they conducted a wellness check on the man and woman at their home on Cordial Road.

While no foul play is suspected, the investigation was complicated by the fact there were 150 cats living in the cluttered house.

Yorktown Police Department Chief Robert Noble told WABC he was “surprised people could live inside with the conditions present.”

As the investigation into their deaths continues, SPCA Westchester sent out a plea for help on social media, calling this cat rescue the “largest rescue in our history.”

The SPCA Westchester described a “horrific scene where 150 cats were discovered living in filth and squalor and being hoarded inside a small, dilapidated home.”

“The conditions were absolutely horrific,” the SPCA said, with cats trapped in every room and in “the walls and ceilings.”

“After years of neglect, all of the cats, who appear to be Abyssinian mixes, are sick and suffering,” the animal welfare nonprofit wrote on Facebook.....

JOURNAL NEWS: Westchester-based NY state trooper arrested for allegedly falsifying traffic tickets - By Asher Stockler

A New York State Police trooper assigned to the Troop K barracks in Hawthorne was arrested Tuesday and charged with issuing two dozen fake traffic tickets to unsuspecting motorists in 2021 and 2022.

Yorktown resident Edward Longo, 34, was hit with a lengthy 40-count charging document, which alleges he offered a false instrument for filing, a class E felony, and committed official misconduct, a class A misdemeanor.

While sentencing in New York is complicated and based on a variety of factors, the charges Longo faces do carry potential prison terms, with the felony charge allowing for a prison term of up to four years, and the misdemeanor charge allowing for a one-year jail term.

Longo's punishment may be further compounded by the fact that he faces multiple counts for both charges.

“Integrity in law enforcement is paramount," said Westchester District Attorney Mimi Rocah in a news release. "I commend our partners at the New York State Police for referring this case to our Office and demonstrating their commitment to accountability and transparency.”

Trooper Daniel McMorris, who investigated the case, explained in charging documents that Troop K regularly monitors its officers for performance-related goals in the issuance of traffic tickets. Troopers who do not meet expectations or whose productivity falls below their peers "may be counseled," he said.

According to McMorris, Longo could have been subject to counseling, a potential step toward more severe reprimand, had he not issued the allegedly false tickets.

Several citations indicated by McMorris suggest that recipients of Longo's tickets may not have had any meaningful interactions with the state trooper whatsoever. Many motorists, for example, were never actually pulled over by Longo on the date the ticket was issued, according to charging documents.

More than one individual ticketed by Longo was "not a motorist with a New York state DMV license," McMorris said. The motorists were referred to by pseudonyms in the charging documents.

In one instance, Longo is said to have issued speeding and unsafe driving tickets to a motorist whom he had not actually pulled over. That motorist had died in a car accident earlier that day....
