When word spread Monday night that a Yonkers police officer had been shot at point-blank range — in the face — it was like a kick in the stomach.
You could feel the region hold its collective breath, waiting for the terrible news that could come next.
The officer, we learned, was just 26, a young woman who graduated from Yonkers' Lincoln High in 2009 and had joined the force in 2015.
So Officer #KaylaMaher's release from the hospital the very next day was absolutely joyful news.
She left Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx in a wheelchair and stood right up to embrace Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano and Police Commissioner #CharlesGardner. With a bandage on her chin, she walked along a "receiving line" of her fellow cops, all cheering, and stopped to hug each one.
Surely, everyone there — and countless others who heard of the shooting — smiled Tuesday when they read or heard that #KaylaMaher was OK.
A split second, or a fraction of an inch, could have been the difference between tragedy and a 26-year-old woman's return home to continue pursuing her dreams......
