FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 2017-09-26 1400

On Monday, September 25th, 2017, at approximately 8:02 PM, members of the Yonkers Police Department responded to the vicinity of Marshall Road at Ridge Road on a complaint of a parked suspicious vehicle occupied by two males. Upon arrival, officers approached the vehicle at which time one of the males suddenly produced a firearm and fired several shots at the officers, striking Police Officer Kayla Maher in the face. The officers returned fire striking the shooter. Police Officer Maher was transported to Jacobi Medical Center and is listed in serious but stable condition with a gunshot wound to her jaw; she is a 2 year veteran of the Yonkers Police Department assigned to the 3rd Precinct.

The suspect who fired at police was transported to a local area hospital for gunshot injuries sustained during the encounter – his condition is also listed as serious but stable. The second suspect was taken into custody at scene. A Glock model 23 .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun was recovered at scene. There are no additional suspects being sought at this time.

Police Commissioner Gardner stated, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Maher and her family. The bravery and courage displayed by our officers at the scene was nothing short of heroic, and I am very proud of them.”

Both suspects have been identified and their identities will be release later today and we are conferring with the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office on appropriate criminal charges. Both suspects are described as Hispanic males that reside in the City of New Rochelle.

The investigation into this incident is continuing; detectives and investigators have worked throughout night and will continue to do so, and more information will be provided when available.

The Yonkers Police Department would also like to thank the Law Enforcement community, and the Yonkers community we serve, for their outpouring of support during this difficult time.
