NEW YORK TIMES: Yonkers Karate Coach Is Charged With Abuse
The owner of a karate school in Yonkers was indicted today on charges that he sexually assaulted a 16-year-old female student in May, the Westchester District Attorney's office said.
It is the third case brought in roughly a year that has involved accusations of sexual misconduct against an athletic coach or instructor in Westchester County.
The incidents have stirred deep concern in many suburban communities, where parents often send their children several times a week to instructors and coaches for lessons in gymnastics, dance, swimming and similar activities.
The suspect in the Yonkers case, Rui Benros, 35, is accused of fondling the student on May 13, during her first lesson at the Shu Ku Kai Karate School at 116 Lake Avenue.
Mr. Benros was charged with first-degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child. Second Meeting
The student, who was not identified, left the school uninjured immediately after the attack. She told her mother about the incident, and both reported it to the police in Yonkers the same day, the authorities said.
"It was only the second time she saw the guy," said Lieut. William Drain, the head of the major case squad for the Yonkers Police Department. "She resisted and she left."
Mr. Benros, who also volunteers as an instructor at the Boys and Girls Club in Yonkers, could not be reached for comment.
The incidents in Westchester County have come at a time when experts say female athletes and their parents have complained in increasing numbers about sexual abuse and harassment from male coaches.
Those allegations have placed an uncomfortable spotlight on after-school athletic programs, which, experts are learning, can present opportunities for abuse. "We see these cases more and more often, and they are of great concern to us," said the Westchester District Attorney, Jeanine Pirro
"We have been and continue to be vigilant in prosecuting those who have access to young people through training and athletic schools and who overstep the line of trust."....

In the latest incident, the authorities said, the female student was attacked during her second visit to the club on May 13.
The day before, she and a friend had gone to the club, which opened this year, inquiring about karate lessons. "He suggested that she come back,"
Ms. Pirro said, referring to Mr. Benros.
"The friend was unable to go back with her for lessons the next day, so she went herself." During the lesson, the authorities said, Mr. Benros began fondling the student, who resisted and then left.
Three days later, after the girl and her mother filed a complaint against him, Mr. Benros was questioned by detectives and placed under arrest.

BREAKING: Computer Problems Hurting Yonkers Students Taking New York State English Tests
TESTING CHAOS: Yonkers students taking multiple-choice exams on computers had all the possible answers show up as "system error."
CAN'T GET IN: Some Yonkers schools initially couldn't log into the exams at all Wednesday morning
PARENTS UPSET: One Parent Reported That Her Child work was lost when the system temporarily crashed at her school.
The Yonkers problems were due to various glitches from Questar Assessment Inc., the Minnesota-based company that provides computer-based testing to the school district, according to school administrators.
Yonkers school union officials say it has long warned the state about being cautious in switching to computer testing.
A Yonkers union insider says, they urged school administrators not to use computerized testing after Questar said it experienced a data breach last year.
But Yonkers decided the entire district would switched to the new computer testing for the standardized exams.
Students dealt with the "system failure" issue on questions, lost notes they had typed into the exams and couldn't log into the system on Wednesday morning, according to sources close to Samantha Rosado-Ciriello, the district's union president.
There are about 12,000 students in grades 3 though 8 in Yonkers eligible to take the tests and they will not get accurate test scores, because of the computer glitches.

The façade renovation is just the first part of what will be a multi-stage process to upgrade both the external and internal spaces of the Will library.
The Will Library, built in 1961, was designed by architect Eli Rabineau and its iconic brightly colored sunshades have long been a familiar sight to all who have seen or visited the branch on Central Avenue.
The current renovation was both a necessity (due to structural issues) and an opportunity to reimagine the building for the next century.
The new design, by KG&D Architects, replaces and upgrades the glass panes, adding colorfully edged sun shades that permit light to come in while honoring the building’s artistic legacy.
This project is Phase One of a long-range plan to improve the building’s exterior. The Will library, located on Central Avenue in Northeast Yonkers, is one of three branches in the YPL system.
The Foundation for the Yonkers Public Library is an independent not-for-profit organization, created in 2017 by the trustees and administrators of the YPL as a means to actively support and enrich the programming, spaces, and collections of the Library.
In its first year, the FYPL plans to support several key library initiatives, including the “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” literacy program and public events at each branch throughout 2018, to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the YPL system.
