HAMLET HUB: Yonkers Autozone Becomes Unauthorized Repair Shop Again

After a two year hiatus, the downtown Yonkers Autozone has become an ad hoc car repair shop once again. The parking lot is bustling with activity. Car owners and mechanics have converted the lot into an unauthorized outdoor maintenance center.....

PARTIAL COVERAGE: Julie Powers Killian sorry little band of supporters were easily drowned out by Shelley Mayer’s campaign HQ volunteers, who joined in chants including “Hey, hey, ho, ho GOP Julie has got to go”, but News 12 did not air these chants, because they are afraid of losing the tens of thousands in Nasty Killian Commercials. EDIT THE NEWS FOOTAGE: News 12 failed to show a Mamaroneck village police officer arriving or Julie Powers Killian saying she didn't think it was antagonistic to hold the news conference at Shelley Mayer's headquarters #GOPFAIL: Clearly the failed Julie Powers Killian's media event is the a tipping point for her campaign that has been full of TEA Party rhetoric that has been personal and unfair to Shelley Mayer. #WestchesterCounty GOP strategists have been telling Julie Powers Killian to stop being a bully with the nasty attack ads and to go with softer and gentler ads where she speaks directly to the voters on issues they are concerned about. But Julie Powers Killian Screaming In Such A High Pitch In Front Of Shelley Mayer's Campaign Headquarters Makes One Wonder If She Is Listening To Local GOP Leaders. Julie Powers Killian, a former Rye city councilwoman, and #ShelleyMayer are facing off in an April 24 special election for the 37th Senate District. The seat is considered pivotal to control of the #NewYork Senate, where Republicans have a one-seat majority. https://www.facebook.com/groups/YonkersNewswire/permalink/2083248465266054/ Do You Remember When We Used To Have Public Access Programming In Yonkers? Mr. Chema's mother, Angela, won her husband's seat after his death, but she did not share his zest for Yonkers politics, but she later resigned. Mr. Chema appeared in a kung fu movie, ''The 13 Style Strikes,'' and was featured on the cover of the June 1987 Karate/Kung Fu Illustrated. He teaches kung fu at the Chinese Community Center. Mr. Chema said he has found the teachings of kung fu helpful. He attended local schools and graduated from Gorton High School and also attended Queens Community College. John was a proud U.S. Army veteran. For over 30 years , he worked for Con Edison as an inspector. Mr. Chema, who graduated from Manhattan College, is the owner of V & P Tires. Mr. Chema's wife, Gem, is from the Philippines. His brother-in-law, Piero Okese, is from Peru. But, Mr. Chema and Councilman Henry Spallone are best known for voting against the consent decree that allowed the construction of 200 units of housing. Mr. Chema said Mayor Nicholas C. Wasicsko and the other Councilmen pressured him to support the consent decree right up until the vote was taken. Many called Peter Chema a Republican hypocrite that voted along pary lines, even though he was the only one representing a district where none of the low-income housing is to be built. https://youtu.be/cPSAFbHwCaY YONKERS RUMORS: Parents Are Saying Boy Scout President Chris Higgins, Supposedly Raises Over 50k Each Year And When They Asked Where The Money Is Going He Doesn't Answer Them https://www.facebook.com/groups/YonkersNewswire/permalink/2081480175442883/ NOW ITS 403 JOB CUTS IN YONKERS..... It is the third case brought in roughly a year that has involved accusations of sexual misconduct against an athletic coach or instructor in Westchester County. The incidents have stirred deep concern in many suburban communities, where parents often send their children several times a week to instructors and coaches for lessons in gymnastics, dance, swimming and similar activities. The suspect in the Yonkers case, Rui Benros, 35, is accused of fondling the student on May 13, during her first lesson at the Shu Ku Kai Karate School at 116 Lake Avenue. Mr. Benros was charged with first-degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child. Second Meeting The student, who was not identified, left the school uninjured immediately after the attack. She told her mother about the incident, and both reported it to the police in Yonkers the same day, the authorities said. "It was only the second time she saw the guy," said Lieut. William Drain, the head of the major case squad for the Yonkers Police Department. "She resisted and she left." Mr. Benros, who also volunteers as an instructor at the Boys and Girls Club in Yonkers, could not be reached for comment. The incidents in Westchester County have come at a time when experts say female athletes and their parents have complained in increasing numbers about sexual abuse and harassment from male coaches. Those allegations have placed an uncomfortable spotlight on after-school athletic programs, which, experts are learning, can present opportunities for abuse. "We see these cases more and more often, and they are of great concern to us," said the Westchester District Attorney, Jeanine Pirro "We have been and continue to be vigilant in prosecuting those who have access to young people through training and athletic schools and who overstep the line of trust.".... .... The other victim was under the age of 11. In the latest incident, the authorities said, the female student was attacked during her second visit to the club on May 13. The day before, she and a friend had gone to the club, which opened this year, inquiring about karate lessons. "He suggested that she come back," Ms. Pirro said, referring to Mr. Benros. "The friend was unable to go back with her for lessons the next day, so she went herself." During the lesson, the authorities said, Mr. Benros began fondling the student, who resisted and then left. Three days later, after the girl and her mother filed a complaint against him, Mr. Benros was questioned by detectives and placed under arrest. https://www.nytimes.com/1994/07/20/nyregion/karate-coach-is-charged-with-abuse.html BOYS LAX: Yonkers takes another step forward JOURNAL NEWS: One win probably would've been enough. CAN'T GET IN: Some Yonkers schools initially couldn't log into the exams at all Wednesday morning PARENTS UPSET: One Parent Reported That Her Child work was lost when the system temporarily crashed at her school. The Yonkers problems were due to various glitches from Questar Assessment Inc., the Minnesota-based company that provides computer-based testing to the school district, according to school administrators. Yonkers school union officials say it has long warned the state about being cautious in switching to computer testing. A Yonkers union insider says, they urged school administrators not to use computerized testing after Questar said it experienced a data breach last year. But Yonkers decided the entire district would switched to the new computer testing for the standardized exams. Students dealt with the "system failure" issue on questions, lost notes they had typed into the exams and couldn't log into the system on Wednesday morning, according to sources close to Samantha Rosado-Ciriello, the district's union president. There are about 12,000 students in grades 3 though 8 in Yonkers eligible to take the tests and they will not get accurate test scores, because of the computer glitches. https://www.facebook.com/groups/YonkersNewswire/permalink/2081617212095846/ COVERING THE BASES: : The NYS AFL-CIO endorsed Democratic Yonkers Senate candidate Shelley Mayer two weeks ago, so their $10,000 donation to the Senate Republicans comes at an awkward time. https://blog.timesunion.com/capitol/archives/281449/union-contribution-sends-mixed-message-leading-up-to-special-elections/ YONKERS RUMOR: City Hall Is A Buzz That Yonkers Educator And Coach Anthony Nicodemo And His Friends Have Started An Informal "Exploratory" Group Aiming At The Shelley Mayer's Soon To Be Vacant State Assembly Seat Many parents in the city of hills feel that Anthony Nicodemo will fight hard for more school funding in Albany, because he is the ocal president of #NYSUT https://www.facebook.com/groups/YonkersNewswire/permalink/2081478015443099/ NEWS 12: Hundreds of layoffs possible at Yonkers schools YONKERS - Hundreds of people who work in the Yonkers School District could lose their jobs due to a nearly $48 million budget deficit. Will Library. YONKERS: A Special Library Aniversary event will run from 6 to 8 pm and feature live music, refreshments, and activities for patrons of all ages. The event is free and open to the public. Guests can RSVP by visiting Eventbrite: https://goo.gl/QNXvDx Celebrate Renewal is part of a year-long series of events to mark the 125th Anniversary of the Yonkers Public Library. It is hosted by The Foundation for the Yonkers Public Library, a new organization created to enhance the Library’s ability to provide outstanding programming, cutting-edge technology, and vibrant meeting places that best serve our diverse community. “The Will branch has been beloved for generations,” said Nancy Maron, president of the Foundation. “This event is a way for the community to both celebrate its history and look to the future. Festivities will include: ● A ribbon-cutting ceremony with Mayor Mike Spano ● Live music by The Joey Berkley Band ● Children’s art project ● Tours of the Local History Incubator and a chance to share your own slice of YPL history ● Library card sign-ups! The façade renovation is just the first part of what will be a multi-stage process to upgrade both the external and internal spaces of the Will library. The Will Library, built in 1961, was designed by architect Eli Rabineau and its iconic brightly colored sunshades have long been a familiar sight to all who have seen or visited the branch on Central Avenue. The current renovation was both a necessity (due to structural issues) and an opportunity to reimagine the building for the next century. The new design, by KG&D Architects, replaces and upgrades the glass panes, adding colorfully edged sun shades that permit light to come in while honoring the building’s artistic legacy. This project is Phase One of a long-range plan to improve the building’s exterior. The Will library, located on Central Avenue in Northeast Yonkers, is one of three branches in the YPL system. The Foundation for the Yonkers Public Library is an independent not-for-profit organization, created in 2017 by the trustees and administrators of the YPL as a means to actively support and enrich the programming, spaces, and collections of the Library. In its first year, the FYPL plans to support several key library initiatives, including the “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” literacy program and public events at each branch throughout 2018, to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the YPL system. For more information about the Foundation for the Yonkers Public Library, visit http://www.foundationforypl.org The Yonkers Public Library was established in 1893 and today is a three-branch system serving the 200,000 residents of Yonkers and surrounding cities and towns. Each year, the Yonkers Public Library welcomes thousands of visitors to engage in programs, borrow materials, and interact with librarians to find the information they seek to enrich and improve their lives. In 2017, the library had over 875,000 visitors, checked out 750,000 items, held 3,146 programs for adults, teens and youth and answered 282,955 reference questions.
