YONKERS - AvalonBay Communities has begun working on its massive waterfront residential project.

The initial ground-preparation work began last month and on Wednesday, workers could be seen clearing debris from the property and setting up a security fence along Alexander Street. The developer and city officials expect to hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday.
The first phase of the project calls for the construction of a five-story, 251-unit building over a parking garage with about 135 spaces, according to the Yonkers Industrial Development Agency's documents. The developer will also build a waterfront esplanade....
